I Made It Myself: Dresses!

So I think I'm finally starting to hang the hang of this whole sewing thing a bit. I was really excited because last week I made my first dress! I've made one toddler romper before, but this was my first "real" article of clothing that I've made! It was very very exciting for me!

I realize it's not the best photo, but with the negative degree freezing cold weather I didn't exactly want to go outside into natural lighting and take pictures.

I'm really in love with the ledger paper fabric!

And perhaps my favorite thing: POCKETS!
I'm one of those people who hates clothing without pockets and now that I know a few different pocket techniques I'm going to put pockets on EVERYTHING!

I actually signed up for a 2-part class to make this dress, but got so excited after the class was over that I finished it the next day on my own. I was so ecstatic after making this dress, that the very next day I had to make another one using the Washi Dress Pattern! I got a little obsessed......

Incase you couldn't tell, I've got a soft spot for wacky fabrics.

I'm really pumped to start making all of my own clothing as well as using sewing to start making gifts for people. I was sort of starting to hit my wall with ceramics. I mean, I love working clay and getting my hands dirty, but I needed a change of pace. Sewing has been so much fun!

Internet Inspiration: Wedding

I've sort of dropped off the face of the planet in terms of my involvement on the internet and my Etsy shop. I've debated just putting The Morose Bee on vacation until this whole move thing is over. I'm moving next Friday (AHH!!) and I'm starting the feel the pressure of needing to get my life in order.

Every once in a while these last few weeks I have totally broken down and just hid in the bedroom and done a whole lot of nothing for  a few hours straight. It's really not helping with my productivity but it's been great for my stress.  So here's a little wedding inspiration that I've been looking at until all hours of the morning.

Hope everyone else is having a less stressful new year!

I've been debating how long to hold off before making the formal announcement, but, seeing as how today I booked my plan ticket and starting packing, I think it's finally safe to announce...

In only 2 weeks!

Moving to Florida was sort of always "the plan," but I got a very unexpected job offer and have decided to move down earlier than I had anticipated.

Not only am I trying to figure out what to take and what to leave behind until Ari and I make the big move and pack up our apartment, but I also need to take my craft supplies and jewelry items with me for the craft shows I'll be doing once I'm in Florida.

Sorting through my jewelry and packing it up.
Half of my suitcase is taken up with Morose Bee stuff and some of it I'm probably going to be forced to leave behind. I could mail some of it, but then there's the issue of whether the price of the shipping is worth the value of the items being shipped.

Silly sibling time. Soon to be part of my daily life.
I'll be living with my parents in the short term and eventually Ari will be moving down to join me and we'll get our own place again. I'm both nervous and excited about it because, while I'll miss having privacy, I will get to spend a lot more time with my family. If there is anything that has been missing from my life since moving to Boston, it is definitely time with my family.

I don't do well in "transition" periods so I'm excited to get to Florida if only so I can get settled in!

In the meantime, I put a bunch of stuff in the sale section in my Etsy shop that you can check out here. I'm trying to sell some of the bulkier items like ornaments so I don't have to pack them.

2013 sure is starting off crazy!

Internet Inspiration: Year of the Snake

I'm getting really pumped for the Chinese lunar new year this year because it's going to be the year of snake! It's got me really pumped that 2013 really will be MY year. I was in Starbuck's yesterday and they had a year of the snake gift card available.

It's got me thinking about snake-related things and feeling inspired to try and make something snake-esque. I'm just not sure what direction to go. In the meantime, here's some inspiration for you!

I don't really have anywhere to hang it, but this banner from PiccadillyPartyCo is great! I wish I had a craft room or something because I would love to hang this.

This image is so striking! Snakes (even though I love them) scare me a lot, but I just want to reach out and pet this awesome guy.

As a vegan, I tend to stay away from animal skin bags, but this bag from ModCloth is 100% faux and I think the color is perfect for spring.
Oh Martha Stewart, you never let me down! This wreath is really cool. I  think I might have to try and make this next Halloween! A pre made wreath and some spray painted rubber snakes?? Why not?!

I really love this print from KrisJohnsen. I always struggle to figure out good gifts for my dad, but I think I may have to get him this print this year for father's day for his office.

KidArt: Winter Camp 2013

This past holiday season, I was visiting with family, but also running a few days of a winter camp art program in Florida. It was nice to get back into the swing of things with some kiddos again, but also a little stressful. I felt kind rusty. The theme of the week was The Lost City of Atlantis and I also incorporated some science-y things about earthquakes and title waves.

Overall it was pretty fun and I think the kids had a great time! Really excited to Spring Break and Summer Camp! You can check out the programs I do here.

Out With The Old and In With The New Swap

Can you believe we already one week into 2013??? I know I said it before, but I am so excited about this year. Even in the last 7 days so many things have been happening in my life that I just know that 2013 is going to bring so many exciting changes for me. It's hard to say more than that right now, but i know this will mean big things for me creatively.

To start the year of right, Lizette and I have put together another swap! The first of 2013!!!!! Hooray!

Out With The Old And In With The New Swap!

  • Each person will be matched up with one partner.
  • You will share one of your New Years Resolutions with your partner to use as inspiration for the item(s) they are going to make for you and should share a resolution with you as well for the item you will make for them. If you have more than one goal for 2013, you can feel free to give them some choices.
  • The actual items made can be anything: decorative wall plaque with the goal in mind (eat more veggies!) to hang in your pantry, a fun headband to celebrate your goal to grow your hair out, a coin purse as a reminder to save money, whatever!! Just be sure to communicate with your partner to see if they have any likes or dislikes about the type of item.

To really make this a fun "out with the old" New Years Resolution swap, the item you make for your partner should incorporate at least TWO unwanted craft supplies from your personal materials. We all have those scraps from projects past that we're just not sure what to do with but we also don't want to throw away because they are still perfectly good and intact supplies. This is your chance!

The Timeline
Sign up by Jan 14th by e-mailing me at themorosebee(at)gmail(dot)com
You will be notified of your parter by Jan 16th
you should contact your partner by Jan 18th
Mail out your swap item by Feb 1st

As always,
We love to hear your stories! When signing up for the swap, let us know what the supplies were that you found new life for in your craft or, even better, send us photos of your process and finished item.

I am so beyond excited about these swaps and I love how many more people are joining in on them! Don't forget to check out my swap partners blog here and the Facebook group for our swaps here

First of all....

I'm feeling really good about 2013. I'm not sure what it is, but I think my move back to Florida has me feeling optimistic.

I thought about putting together a few New Years Resolutions this year, but then I remembered that right after my birthday I put together my 23 before 24 List. Rather than reinvent the wheel, I took a look at what I had set out to accomplish a few months ago and see how much progress I've made in the last 2 months.

The numbers skip around a bit because I'm only looking at the ones that I've actually made progress on, but I hope to tackle the rest of the list sooner than later.

4. Learn basic sewing skills: One down!!! With "basic" being the keyword. I feel pretty confident at my ability to tackle most beginner sewing projects and even bought a dress pattern classified as "intermediate." Watch out now! It's gettin' real.

5. Sew my Halloween 2013 costumes completely from scratch: I've decided what I want to be and I'm going to make a few sample pieces before I dive into trying to get this together. I would love to have it made way in advance so it's done and I don't have to stress about it.

6. Participate in 4 craft shows: REALLY excited about this one! I'm going to be a vendor in the 2013 Retro Indie Market in Delray Beach, Fl!!! I am also going to have a booth at the Downtown Open Markets in Boca Raton, Fl in May. Then I have another 2 picked out that I want to have a booth at, but it's too early to apply. Keeping my fingers crossed. I'm also kinda hoping to make it to the Brooklyn Renegade this year, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

9. Streamline The Morose Bee product line:  I'll be posting more about this soon!!! I'm also trying to figure out how I can add new items to the shop (aka non ceramic things). I don't want to be one of those people with the weird Etsy shops that have jumbled together items with no cohesion, but I do want to expand.

11. Get in the habit of drawing something every day: I haven't really been doing to well with this one as I've been using most of my creative energy to get my Christmas gifts finished, but hopefully once the holiday craziness settles I can start this.

13. Launch my second blog: The blog is actually sent up, but it has very specific content so it needs a few more weeks of work. It's almost ready though!

16. Streamline my wardrobe: Boom! #2! It feels so good to cross things off. I took my biggest haul of clothing of my entire life to the consignment store and then the rest to Goodwill a few weeks ago. I think I now have the least amount of clothes I have ever had and it feels pretty good. Maybe this seems silly to some people, but I am a closeted hoarder so it's a huge accomplishment for me!

20. Finish cooking every recipe in Appetite for Reduction: So, this one I haven't finished, but I think I'm done either way. After making a few of the last recipes I haven't tried yet, what I realized is part of the reason I haven't made them yet is because the ingredients just aren't my favorite. They were yummy, but it's less fun to cook when you retrain yourself to specific recipes.

22. Get 9 hours of sleep a night
23. Have on day off per week
These two have actually been working out quite nicely for me although my hours being cut at work have a lot to do with it, but hey I'm not complaining!
