Busy Bee

artwork from flapperdoodle

I ended up having a sort of last minute trip home to Florida for this weekend. My parents are going on a work trip and I'm here taking care of the kiddos. Usually when I come home, I end up working at my old job Go van Gogh while I'm here. I've actually posted about it a couple of times here and here.

Needless to say, it ends up not really ever being much of a vacation considering I'm working everyday.

Well this trip was a bit on the fly so I never got around to calling my old job. Today when I arrived I sat down to plan out what was going to be happening this weekend and I thought "okay so I have to get my siblings up, ready for school, and to their bus stop by 7am. After they are at school I have to go........... uh..... I have to...... umm..... OH MY GOD. I DON'T HAVE TO DO ANYTHING."

I don't know if I can possibly explain what this feeling is like for some one like me. I am always doing something, trying to make something, rushing off somewhere, running late for something, behind on a million things. I now have FOUR WHOLE DAYS of relaxing, reading, and being with my brother and sister. I'm almost in shock.

Being someone who strives to be an artist and maker of inspiring goods, being so busy and stressed out all of the time is totally counterproductive. I'm hoping to use this trip as my chance to get on top of my life and really reevaluate what I'm doing. Fourteen hour work days,  never spending time with Ari, no time to create new art or jewelry pieces. Is that what I want?

I was really stressing about leaving work and taking the time out of my schedule for this trip, but maybe it's exactly what I was needed.

KidArt-Card Making

I realized recently that although my primary daily activity has been doing art and crafts with kids for the last 4 (almost 5! yikes!) years, it's somehow something I rarely document.  Doing art with children can be extremely trying and there I days that I just want to pull all of my hair out, but there are lots of different tips and tricks that you can use to keep everyone having a good time (including the adults! woo!).  I think KidArt will quite possibly be my new favorite blog segment as I love my job!

With yesterday being Valentine's Day, I helped the kids I babysit make some cards for their classroom. The idea of Valentine's was a little elusive and honesty trying to get small children to understand the idea of giving things are "special" can be tough. If you've ever had a kid hand you a piece of garbage and act like it was a big deal, you should know what I mean

Tips For Making Cards With Toddlers
1. Harness what they do best. The younger the kids, the less likely hey are to be able to create intentional designs or cut in straight lines. For their Valentines, I had the kids simply do whatever they wanted with markers and stickers on plain pieces of paper and then used those decorated pieces to form the cards afterwards.
2. Emphasize the individual. When making a large quantity of any kind of craft, attention spans can run out. Considering we pumped out over a dozen cards, I asked the kids about each of the friends they were making cards for while they were decorating. Focusing on one card and one person at a time made the task a little more manageable. It can also work as a good lesson in friendship.
3. Let them get messy. When doing any art project with kids, you kind of have to resign yourself to there be a huge mess by the end of it. It's okay! Sometimes freaking out about every little thing that spills on the ground is more stressful than the mess itself. Your next activity can be clean up time!

Feels Like Fall

I got dressed the other day and quickly realized I felt very AUTUMN. I was wearing black, orange, grey, and forest green! Sounds like earth tone fall colors for sure. I realized that it hasn't quite felt like winter at all this season. It's snowed all of 2 or 3 times, as opposed to last winter's onslaught of blizzards, and  a heavy coat is almost never necessary.

The whole outfit just felt like the perfect opportunity to wear my PUMPKIN RING!

There's a few items that are really "me" that I have multiple of in my own personal jewelry collection as well as in my shop and this ring is definitely one of them. One of my best friends and I have a thing for pumpkins and the color orange in general. Maybe it's Cinderella or the fact that I just love Halloween, but there is something magical about pumpkins.

I would dress like it's October all year if it was more acceptable in say...err...June? Summer dresses with pumpkins? No?

I mean c'mon, look at those leaves! You can't say fall isn't sticking around an awkwardly long time! Fifty degrees everyday? Pshaw! It's fall, my dears. It may be February, but it's still fall.

Bee Mine

I love Saint Valentine's day. I don't quite know why as I'm not a particularly lovey-dovey-gross-and-mushy kind of person. It's just always been one of my favorite holidays even when I was single. Maybe it's my love of the color red? Who can say. Here are a few of some of my favorite Valentine's Day related items! HAPPY FEBRUARY!
