Etsy Seller Idol

I received a new item from an Etsy seller a few days ago and I was so impressed with its delivery I just had to share it.

I had been eye balling this AMAZING pillow from carolinedulko and decided to splurge and buy it.

Not only is this little guy adorable, but he actually matches my couch and, let's be honest, almost nothing actually matches my old lady couch.

Okay so he's super cute. That's obvious. Looks great on my couch. that's obvious. BUT THEN....he actually arrives and he's packed inside an ADORABLE SCREEN PRINTED LINEN TOTE BAG.

BE STILL MY HEART

Not only is it a cute form of packaging, but the bag is so cute that I've been using it as my actual purse for the last few days. It's just some kind of thin, cotton blend something-or-other that probably didn't cost the seller very much, but it completely inspired me to put more thought into my packaging.

I spent most of yesterday hunting around on the internet looking for various boxes, ribbons, custom stickers, funky twine, and other cute things that I could start ordering regularly to mail my items out. I want other people to feel as excited and giddy as I was receiving this adorable little bag.
Ari brought up the point that I would have to consider keeping my shipping prices higher to cover the cost of stickers and ribbon and all of that. It's true, however, I would rather eat it on the packaging costs if it means creating the same feeling of joy when other people receive my items.

I only wish I would have done all of this before the holiday season kicked in!

Do you have any fun packaging tips?

Holiday How To

This Christmas, my friend Rachael has the idea to do a themed Christmas tree so we chose a Mexican/Dios de los Muertos themed tree. I know it's kind of an odd mash up of two holidays, but I thought it would make a fun thematic tree idea. After looking at a bunch of traditional Mexican artwork, I got inspired to make my own tree topper! Here's how:

First I made a basic heart shape by wrapping masking tape around a wad of used grocery bags. Keep wrapping the tape around until you get just the right shape you're looking for.

Then I took some plaster sheets and cut them into strips. You only need about a foot and a half worth of the roll cut into about 1/2 inch strips.

Dip each strip in water and begin wrapping around your base shape. Layer the strips over top of one another to make sure the item is strong and solid.

And that's pretty much it! That's the awesome thing about plaster strips! They dry in any shape you leave them and you can use almost anything as your mold.
To finish mine off, I painted the entire thing in red paint and then used Mod Podge to put a photo of Frida Kahlo in the center the heart.

Our tree is a little sparse considering it's our first year with ornaments or anything, but I think I little Charlie Brown-esque tree is a cutie.

Christmas Gift Creations

This year I'm making as many gifts as I can. Considering my access to pottery supplies, it just seems silly not too. This what I made for my mom and step-dad. It's a kitchen counter top compost jar complete with carbon filter.

Sorry for the poor photo quality, but I was using Photo Booth since my camera seems to be on the fritz.

"No roses grow on a trooper's grave..."
"...but compost help, it may"
I don't think my mom reads this blog otherwise I may have just ruined the surprise!

What do you guys think about the compost canisters? Etsy worthy or not "mainstream" enough for the general public? I still have 3 others with no real recipient to go to. Any thoughts?

Internet Inspiration

This is such an amazing! I could just play at this all day trying to create different images.

The article didn't go into a ton of detail about how it was made or what exactly the keys are made up of, but either way this idea blows my mind.

Getting Festive

Hello! Sorry I've been MIA for a few days, but I've been working a lot trying to haul through the Christmas rush at the ceramic studio as well trying to catch up on other tasks like the mountain of laundry in the bedroom corner (yikes).

We purchased our tiny and yet so adorable Christmas tree the other day and I'm excited to share lots of craft projects with you as we decorate our tree with handmade ornaments. I'm hoping to get our tree topper finished this weekend!

Oh well hello little ceramic beaver friend. Check him out here in The Morose Bee shop!

Tomorrow night I'll be finishing up all my hand painted pottery gifts for various friends and family members as well. Tons of photos and how-to's to come!
