Book Worm

Etsy recently advertised that they're kicking off a speaker series featuring Kari Chapin, the author of The Handmade Marketplace. Clicky clicky for the announcement. Of course, I had to instantly buy this book from amazon.com. My main motivation for this book was that I recently finished reading Crafty Superstar by Grace Dobush. Crafty Superstar was an awesome read full of the most helpful information I have seen so far. During the course of reading this book, I signed up for two samplers, purchased www.themorosebee.com, researched and submitted THREE craft show applications, and bookmarked almost every single website she mentions throughout the book and have started checking them daily. I am officially a craft-book-reading-addict. Sure there are tons of wonderful craft forums all over the internet where everyone wants to dish out their opinions on how you should run your business, but Crafty Superstar was insightful, funny, and informative. Take that angry forum ranter! I highly recommend a book like The Handmade Marketplace or Crafty Superstar to anyone who sells on Etsy or anywhere else for that matter.

For my birthday in 2008, my friend Rachael gave me a Vegan Cupcakes Take Over The World by Isa Chandra Moskowitz and Terry Hope Romero.
I should probably preface this with the fact that baking has never been my strong suite. I'm am notorious for doing things like forgetting to add shortening or even the flour or some other ridiculous thing that leads to horrible baked goodies. However, I do love cooking and, as a vegan, I much prefer cooking than trying miserably to find vegan options at the restaurants around my house. I should also preface this with the fact that I don't like cake. I am pie girl. Every year for my birthday I have an apple pie with candles in it. I find that cake is normally too sweet from too much frosting or too dry from bad cake. The thing that is so wonderful about cupcakes is they are the perfect 3 bite serving of cake. Just enough so you can taste the sweetness and the flavors and enjoy it. Cupcakes are always delicious, a big slice of cake is not. I know it's weird, but what can I say? I'm a pie girl.

Anyways,I decided a few months ago that I was going to cook my way through this book and make one new batch of cupcakes a week. Well...I got about 3 flavors in and lost my way. I had also been accidentally using corn meal instead of corn starch so everything was tasting like corn bread.

So this week I became renergized with my love of cupcakes and decide to make Golden Vanilla Cupcakes with Vegan Fluffy Buttercream Frosting. I was quite pleased and they were quite yummy. I still havent managed to get the consistency of the frosting quite right, but everyone loves a yummy sugary mess.

Golden Vanilla Cupcakes:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit
2. Whisk 1 cup of soy milk with 1 tsp of apple cider vinegar and set mixture to the side a few minutes to curdle
3. Beat together sou milk mixture, 1/3 cup canola oil, 3/4 cup granulated sugar, 2 tsp vanilla extract, 1/4 tsp almond extract
4. Sift in 1 1/4 cup flour, 2 tbsp corn starch, 3/4 tsp baking power, 1/2 tsp baking soda, 1/2 tsp salt and mix
5. Fill your cupcake liners 2/3 of the way full and bake for 20-22 minutes. Transfer cupcakes to a cooling rack and allow to completely cool before frosting

Vegan Fluffy Buttercream Frosting
1. Beat together 1/2 non hydrogenated shortening, 1/2 non hydrogenated margarine until well combined and fluffy
2. Add 3 1/2 cups of confectioners sugar and beat for about 3 more minutes
3. Add 1 1/2 tsp vanilla extract, 1/4 plain soy milk and beat for another 5-7 minutes

You can buy Vegan Cupcakes Take Over the World here off of Amazon or here off of Barnes and Noble

internet inspiration part 2

so i have this thing for collecting photos i find that i love from the internet. i used to use being a myspace addict as an excuse to arrange and rearrange them on my profile in the hippest ways possible. now that facebook is the new myspace and tumblr is the new facebook and twitter is the new i can't keep up with these things, i figure the best way to post the images that inspire me would be in the place that i discuss where all the inspiration goes. i posted a few photos that i liked a while ago and i've decided to make it a regular things.
soo without any more delay, here is today's internet inspiration...

Celebrity Stache

Well I have no idea why blogger is loading this picture sideways, but here it is...THE WARIO MUSTACHE! This little guy will be for sale in my etsy shop once I can let myself stop watching How I Met Your Mother. I think the Wario and the Mario will get quite cozy together.

In other exciting news, the morose bee jewelry is now for sale at Eni-Thing, a consignment store in San Jose, California. I doubt anyone reads this blog yet, but if you do and if you happen to be anywhere near San Jose you can check out my stuff!

oh saturday

very rarely do i actually get the chance to go out and have a normal casual Saturday. i'm a busy person who works all of the time, but i jump started my weekend with an etsy convo from a boutique opening next weekend in san jose california called eni thing. they're interested in having 20 of my items on consignment in their store and i am SO FRICKIN EXCITED about the fact that someone liked my jewelry enough to ask me to send them 20 pieces of it for their store. you can check out their website here.
THEN i went with my bff kaleigh to this house were some dude that was shady as all hell was selling bicycles. His pad was pretty sketchy and was decorated with armless lawn jockeys and mannequins that looked like rape victims, but he did have some nice bikes at killer prices. if anyone lives in south florida, this guy lives at...I THINK.... 5621 west broward blvd and has some pretty sweet rides. if i wasnt moving in august and trying cut down on posessions i'm going to have to haul across the country i totally would have bought a bike.

I ended my day cruising around nature reserves with ari checking out wildlife and enjoying the beautiful day. for the most part the places we went were overrun with old people with fancy cameras behaving as if they were capturing some rare shot out in the deepest darkest reaches of the amazon, but i only let it frustrate me a little. meanwhile i snapped some photos of cute little swamp friends here and there and was only slightly bummed i remember my camera but forgot a memory card.

My favorite part of the day is when we stopped at 7-11 on the way home and i saw this... it's the best thing i've seen in a while and that kid is too legit to quit. talk about a celebrity stache. i guess it goes without saying that not a whole lot of crafting went on the today, but NEVER FEAR! new items will be arriving on monday. the wario stache i promised will follow not long after.

Always a Step Behind

So I feel like I'm always saying things like "MORE JEWELRY ON THE WAY!" rather than "hey guys check out all my new stuff!" but it's true! I have a huge pile of items in my living room that just need one last jump ring or a clasp or a something that I'm anxiously waiting to finally arrive in the mail for one of my suppliers. i can hand sculpt the clay pendants all day, but the hardware bits and pieces are killing me. it would probably be in my best interest to find a local bead store so I don't have to do this waiting game, but then I'd probably spend too much money.

Butttt....GOOD NEWS... I finally got some gnomes in the kiln and they are very cute. I should have more jewelry than I have time to write descriptions for ready to go by this time next week.

It's been a while since I've done a celebrity stache, but I think I'm ready for something new... drumroll please.....

my next victim for celebrity stache will be
I have the Mario stache in my store already so I think WARIO is the way to go next. I'll let ya know when it's done :]

Found Some Finds

I thought I would take today to share some awesome things I've come across on the great wide web lately. A lot of my jewelry has been inspired by candy or mustaches or other cutesy things, but my actual studio art is a little different from all of that. I would love to take my jewelry in a more colorful abstract direction and here is a little inspiration I've come across lately......
