A Bit of the Bubbly

I've been making these Speech Bubble Necklaces for a while now and I'm just so fond of them.

I've decided that in honor of the fall and my favorite holiday HALLOWEEN (squee!) You can now have the choice between a black Sharpie or an oranage Sharpie with your purchase!

Habitat for Insanity- Dream Kitchen

Ya'll....

I have discovered.....

THE KITCHEN OF MY DREAMS!

As you may know, Ari and I love hand thrown pottery. Our entire dish set is handmade by his friend Brett. I think when you have dishes are so much more  than just functional, it only makes sense to have them exposed on shelving. They're a decoration all by themselves! Plus I love that this kitchen is accessible and lived in without being a total freaking disaster.

Don't even get me started on the counter tops or totally sweet sink. Lord help me...

Edible Crafts

I'm really excited for col weather already! I even find myself craving foods like chili and pot pie which are heartier and I normally save for winter. The other night I decided to make a stew of sorts to quench my winter foods craving.

Tempeh and Portobello Mushroom Stew

Always steam your tempeh before cooking it! If you've ever tried tempeh and found it bitter, you probably just needed to steam it first.

Chopped up all of my my veggies and my seasonings are ready to go. Bell peppers, onions, portobello mushrooms.

Frying up my tempeh! Fried tempeh has a bit more crunch and it only needs to be in the pan for about 3 minutes on each side.

Next up, sauteing garlic, onions, and bell peppers.

After about 7 minutes, add in your mushrooms and continue to cook everything down.

Adding in some veggie broth, spices, sherry, and I love adding some kind of flour or thickener to give that thick creamy texture.

Add in your tempeh at the very end and mix everything together!

A little rosemary focaccia bread on the side and yum!!! Bring on winter!

New Items

Just in time for HALLOWEEN! Create your own Jack-O-Lantern necklace!
Necklace comes as a plain pumpkin with a Sharpie to either make a cute face or adding words!

And, as usual, it all wipes clean with a little Windex!

One Year in Boston

This time last year Ari and I were sitting on an air mattress on the floor of our brand new apartment and a wee bit nervous about this big new city called Boston we had found ourselves in. I'm really excited for my second upcoming winter in Boston. I feel more prepared about how to dress in the freezing cold and I'm already excited for Christmas at home. However, some days there are things I miss dearly about Florida.

What I miss: The Beach!

Okay sure, I'm still in a coastal town, but New England beaches are just NOT Florida beaches. The water here is dark and opaque. It freaks me out. The salty breeze is comforting, but that's about it.

What I don't miss: Hurricanes

It's not just the crazy weather. It's destroying entire towns, killing people, and bringing all daily activities to a screeching halt.

What I miss: Planned Communities!

Florida is a relatively new state in terms of development so most neighborhoods are built on a grid. You miss your turn? No biggie! Just turn down the next street. In Boston, every road twists and turns off in some crazy random direction. The city was built on carriage roads so there is crazy cobblestones, dead ends, and everything else in between. I'm always getting lost!

What I don't miss: Planned Communities

Building after building that looks exactly the same so you don't even know which house is yours? Bleh! Every building in Boston is unique and decades old. There office buildings inside of rundown cathedrals in New England. How awesome is that?!

What I miss: Southern Hospitality!

In Boston everything is a bit harsh. I get frustrated some days because I don't think anyone's mama taught them any manners! In Florida people smile at you if they pass you on the street and it Boston you're lucky if you can even get a "please" or "thank you" out of anyone. And forget pushing in your chair or holding the door open for anyone.

What I don't miss: Southern Racism

Okay so just saying "southern racism" is unfair and controversial, but there so many people from where I come from that brag about how their parents are still involved in the Ku Klux Klan. If you go on the KKK Wikipedia page, the first picture on there was taken 20 minutes from where I lived. I'm not saying no one is racist in the Northeast, but everyone in Boston is from somewhere else. When you have so many cultures coming together, its hard to have concentrated hatred.

I'm really excited to see how my next year in Boston turns out. Going back to school, more art projects along the way, and a lot more vegan cooking! Yum!

Big Changes

Me in art classes Summer 2009
I have not been working a lot of Morose Bee related things this week because last week I made the last minute decision to GO BACK TO SCHOOL. Gah! Ari and I were talking about finances and a little switch just went off in my head and I though "screw it! I'm going back to school." I left school for financial reasons, but now I feel that I should go back for my overall financial interests in the long run.

I'm up in the left hand corner! PBG Lifestyle Magazine 2009
Plus I REALLY MISS PASTELS AND WATERCOLORS! Ceramics and jewelry design is great, but I miss good ol' fashion paper some days. You just cannot create as much visual interest with ceramic glazes. I'm excited to build my portfolio and share my work in progress with all of you. I can't even begin to imagine what kind of crazy schedule I'm going to have over the next few months, but I do know that life is about to get even more interesting.

Edible Crafts- Studying Calls for Treats

It feels like its been forever since I made a yummy batch of cookies, but tonight I had some serious late night studying going on for a derby rules test tomorrow. So naturally ginger macadamia nut cookies were required.

This were made inspired by a recipe from Vegan Cookies Invade Your Cookie Jar. I swear I have other dessert cookbooks! The recipes just aren't as good....

Chopping my candied ginger

Sifting some flour, baking soda, salt, and nutmeg

Canola oil, raw sugar, brown sugar, vanilla extract, coconut extract

Oh the infamous mixing of your wet and dry ingredients

Folding in macadamia nuts and the candied ginger

Godspeed little dough balls!

14 minutes in the oven and here they are baked and delicious!

Even Ari said they were some of the best cookies I've ever made. Thanks Isa! Now I just hope I can pass my test....
